Dr. Montessori called the 3-6 year environment a “Casa de Bambini”. The literal translation is “Children’s House”. Rather than a class room, it is a place where children live beyond studying. They take ownership and responsibility through caring for their environment, they take pride in caring for themselves. Montessori recognized each child as a unique individual. The environment is designed to help the children to become independent, develop concentration and refine their movements. The materials help the children move from simple to complex and from concrete to abstract. Impressions are taken in through all the senses.

Montessori Map Puzzles

The world map is designed with precise details; colors are consistent, making the countries easier to memorize, the sizes are proportional, and kids are often amazed how small and large countries are compared. In addition, the peg on each country is designed so that the child holds the piece as they would a pencil.

Moveable Alphabet

Children begin to recognize 3-4 consonant sounds (blue) and one vowel sound (red) in a much less intimidating way than with paper and pencil. The goals of this lesson are to focus on order, concentration, coordination, independence, self-esteem, and preparation for writing, reading, and spelling.

Aspects of the Primary Program

The main pedagogical areas in the Children’s House include Practical Life, Sensorial, Language, Mathematics and Cultural topics (geography, zoology botany, music etc.).

Based on the child’s need for order and routine it is important for a child to attend school consistently and on time to benefit from a full three-hour work cycle each day. The children who are 4 1/2 through 6 years of age enjoy staying for lunch and spending the afternoon to further explore the materials and see large pieces of work through to conclusion. Children have the opportunity to help and learn from each other throughout the day.

The children are treated with respect and learn respect for others.
